Kiuas

Monday, August 4, 2008

Kiuas is a heavy metal band from Espoo, Finland. Their music has got influences from power metal, folk metal and the different styles of extreme metal. Influences from progressive metal can also be heard in some songs. The band has had a steady line-up ever since they formed.
Before the formation of Kiuas, three musicians (Markku Näreneva, Teemu Tuominen and Ilja Jalkanen) played in a band known as Iconofear, which plays a genre of music known as dark heavy metal. Iconofear had formed after the break-up of a blackened death metal band known as Agonia. They released a single EP before those three musicians left the band to concentrate on Kiuas. Kiuas was formed in 2000 when the four original members (Mikko Salovaara, Markku Näreneva, Teemu Tuominen and Atte Tanskanen) found a lead singer, Ilja Jalkanen. In 2002, funded only by themselves, they released their first demo known as The Discipline of Steel, that featured four songs, and was rooted deep in the mysticism and importance of steel, and its effect on Finnish culture. In 2003, they successfully released Born Under the Northern Lights, and soon had many offers for record deals. With fans on their side, and a deal from Rage of Achilles, they signed the contract. In 2004, Kiuas's first label-aided release was completed. Winter in June (MCD EP) was released in Finland and was well received in the metal and hard rock community. Their ability to combine extreme sub-genres of metal with hard rock and classical guitar have led them to become a recognizable force. Later that year, Rage of Achilles reported that they were going out of business due to the fact they could not support themselves due to belonging to so many record deals in such short amount of time. For this reason, Kiuas, and their co-workers, and associated acts; Amoral, Elenium, Omnium Gatherum, Manitou were cast out without a label, and some without any official release. A few months later, an offer came from the major-label Spinefarm Records.

Kreator

Kreator is a thrash metal band from Essen, Germany. They originally started under the name Tormentor. Starting their career in 1982, they played thrash metal with Venom influences. The band is also influenced by Slayer, Metallica, Mercyful Fate, and Bathory. Their style of music is similar to their compatriots Destruction and Sodom, the other two big German thrash metal bands. All three of these bands are often credited with helping create death metal, by containing a few elements of what was to become death metal. Kreator's work has been consistently in the vein of pure thrash, with the exception of four albums (Renewal, Cause for Conflict, Outcast and Endorama) during the 1990s when they undertook serious experimentation. Incorporating industrial, goth and avant-garde elements into their sound, the results were uneven in some fans' and also critics' eyes.

Katatonia

Katatonia is a Swedish metal band formed in Stockholm in 1991 by Jonas Renkse (formerly aka Lord Seth) and Anders Nyström (formerly aka Blakkheim). The early Katatonia albums are noted for the overall melancholy of their sound, often giving them the classification of doom metal or dark metal. Katatonia's more recent albums have progressed to a wider sound, with modern overtones, dropped guitars, symphonic synths and arrangements, alternative sounds and generally heavier riffs. Opeth's Mikael Åkerfeldt performed the growling vocals on Brave Murder Day and Sounds of Decay after regular Katatonia singer (and then drummer) Jonas Renkse became unable to scream properly. During this time, the band decided to change their sound to a more soft sound with clean vocals beginning with 1998's Discouraged Ones. This shift in instrumental tone and vocal style was accompanied by an appreciable decrease in the length of the band's songs, with latter period songs typically lasting around four minutes. Katatonia has released two compilations. Brave Yester Days (the title being a play on their album Brave Murder Day) is a double-disc release including all cuts from EPs up to Saw You Drown, selected cuts from full-length albums Brave Murder Day and Dance of December Souls, and two tracks from a compilation. The Black Sessions is a limited release that documents later releases and includes a live DVD.

Korn

This Alternative-Metal group was formed in Bakersfield, California USA, in 1992 by lead singer Jonathan Davis, guitarists James 'Munky' Shaffer and Brian 'Head' Welch, bassist Reginald 'Fieldy' Arvizu and drummer David Silveria. Two years later, Korn released its self-titled debut album; although it received very little support from critics, cracked The Billboard Top 200 chart reaching a respectable #72 position, but their wildly dynamic heavy-Rock was ready to explode. In October 1996, the band released their second album, "Life Is Peachy"; the record peaked at #3 on The Billboard Top 200 and cracked the top 40 in the U.K. while the band toured across Europe with Limp Bizkit and Helmet.Korn's audience continued to grow, during the second half of the '90s as the group's third album, 1998's "Follow The Leader", climbed to the top slot of The Billboard 200 chart and crashed into the top 5 of the British chart, it spawned two smash singles: "Got The Life" made top 20 on both Modern and Mainstream Rock charts and "Freak On A Leash" climbed into the top 10 in the same charts.By the fall of 1999, the quintet released "Issues", another strong commercial LP which shot to #1 on the U.S. Albums chart, the record included two Modern Rock top 10 hit singles: "Falling Away From Me" and "Make Me Bad".Korn, after two-year break, rumors of crisis and solo projects, reconvened to record a new album; "Untouchables" was released in mid-2002 and hit the top 3 of the North-American Albums charts; the first single, "Here To Stay", peaked at #4 spots, the highest chart-position that the band ever reached, on both Billboard's Rock charts, the track also won a Grammy for Best Metal Performance; the second single, "Thoughtless", reached the #6 position on The Mainstream Rock list; an international tour with Puddle Of Mudd and TRUSTcompany ensued, by this point "Untouchables" became a huge hit in Europe, cracking the top 5 on the National U.K. Albums chart.

Kittie

The all-female Alternative-Metal band Kittie was founded in London, Ontario CANADA, in 1996 by sisters Mercedes and Morgan Lander when they were barely on the cusp of adolescence; the initial line-up finds Mercedes playing drums with Morgan on vocals+guitar, along with fellow students Fallon Bowman on guitar and Tanya Candler on bass. The quartet released an eponymous 6-track EP in 1999 but Candler was forced to leave the band that winter due to health problems, she was replaced with Talena Atfield.Their debut full-length disc, "Spit", was issued in early 2000 by NG / Artemis Records, this album was quickly certified gold in their homeland and reached the #79 position on The Billboard Top 200 chart. In 2001, Bowman left Kittie without citing her reasons; however, the three remaining members released "Oracle" in October, that same year, peaking at #57 on the U.S. Billboard 200 Albums list.Kittie have toured extensively, played with such notables as Slipknot, Pantera and co-headlined second stage at Ozzfest; their incisive brand of music has definitely taken them into uncharted territory, never before have an all girl Metal band impacted on such a male dominated genre.Talena Atfield left in 2002, also without giving any official reason, she was replaced by Jennifer Arroyo on bass guitar. Two years later they added a fourth member, the second guitarist Lisa Marx and released "Until The End" in the summer of 2004, it reached #105 on The Billboard Top 200 Albums chart. Kittie has set "Funeral For Yesterday" as the title of its new album, due on February 20, 2007 via the group's own X Of Infamy; the band, which now consists of Mercedes and Morgan Lander, Tara McLeod on guitar and Trish Doan bass, have selected the title-track as the first single off their forthcoming release.

Kalmah

Kalmah is a melodic death metal band from Oulu, Finland that formed in 1998. In less than a year after its formation, Kalmah was signed by Spinefarm Records, a Finnish record label. "Kalmah" is Karelian and could be translated as "to the grave" or "to the death". The band is often termed "Swamp Metal" after their album cover themes.
Kalmah began in 1991 when Pekka Kokko and Petri Sankala founded the band Ancestor which originally played thrash metal, speed metal and death metal. After Ancestor had recorded two demos, Antti Kokko joined the band as lead guitarist. The new band consisted of Pekka Kokko (vocals, guitar), Antti Kokko (lead guitar), Pasi Hiltula (keyboards), Altti Veteläinen (bass), and Petri Sankala (drums) and converted to melodic death metal, but still incorporating their original styles. The newly formed Kalmah then began to write new songs for a promotional CD entitled Svieri Obraza. With this demo, they acquired a recording contract with Spinefarm Records. The band then headed to Tico-Tico Studios to record their debut album.
